As Jimmy told Craig at dinner, small organic farming can produce more food over the longer term because it creates a natural robust ecosystem and doesn’t destroy soil. The many advantages of this kind of agriculture (agroecology) were discussed comprehensively in the United Nations Trade and Environment Review 2013 entitled “Wake up Before it is Too Late.”

It’s over 300 pages of detailed, well-researched analysis, warning that we need to quickly change our big chemical based agricultural practices, and explaining many benefits of doing so, including a large counter impact on climate change. You can check it out or download the entire Report at:

Developing and developed countries alike need a paradigm shift in agricultural development: from a “green revolution” to a “truly ecological intensification” approach. This implies a rapid and significant shift from conventional, monoculture-based and high external-input-dependent industrial production towards mosaics of sustainable, regenerative production systems that also considerably improve the productivity of small-scale farmers.

We need to see a move from a linear to a holistic approach in agricultural management, which recognizes that a farmer is not only a producer of agricultural goods, but also a manager of an agro-ecological system that provides quite a number of public goods and services (e.g. water, soil, landscape, energy, biodiversity, and recreation) UNCTAD’s Trade and Environment Review 2013 (TER13) contends.”

The key point we hope people pick up on is that the survival of humanity will be greatly enhanced if big business stops dominating agriculture. It is a myth to suggest massive commercialization of agriculture is necessary to feed the world (note from IOET, this is just like other myths perpetuated by big business; like the myth about pharmaceutical companies existing to heal people, and GMO companies existing to feed starving people – THEY ARE GIANT’S FOCUSSED ON GROWING THEIR PROFITS).

In the agricultural context, the Report makes it clear that industrial farming and chemical fertilizers are killing soils and making a large contribution to the problem of greenhouse gases. Further, commercialized livestock farming is a massive user of resources (water and feed concentrate). To top it off, financial speculation around food prices is also harming small farming operations.

What we wonder is:

  1. How is it that politicians are so gullible and short sighted, or otherwise like to pander to big-business, even where our food is concerned (greed? lobbying?)?
  2. How can we accept that most people suffering from hunger and /or malnutrition live in rural areas.

It makes us ashamed to be a part of the human race, and it is time ‘ the people’ got together to create real solutions; a spread of small scale organic farming THAT IS WHAT WESTERN TAXPAYER DOLLARS SHOULD BE SUBSIDISING!!

The Report also notes that there is great scope to improve soil fertility by replacing synthetic fertilisers with organic fertilisers, and, replacing monocultures with diverse crop rotation.

How much more obvious can those detailed papers make it
