Let Food be Your Medicine

My name is Gemma.  I really like our new teacher Miss Stevens, she showed us some great movie clips about how food is really powerful as medicine.  The movie about the diabetics was very entertaining and they were so funny and inspiring, but it did confuse me that they were angry at their doctors for not telling them that raw food could help their diabetes.  Maybe their doctors didn’t know this?  Anyway, it was great that the diabetics were able get off their insulin by eating raw food.  Charlotte, who always seems angry, said that the father of modern medicine, who was called Hippocrates, had a saying of ‘Let the food be your medicine.’  My dad is a doctor and he doesn’t really talk much about food so I am very excited to discuss this with him.

I will let you read on to see how that discussion with dad went, let’s just say I decided to do my own research on this and it really does seem that people in old times said to use our food to make us healthy.  Firstly, ‘Let the food be your medicine‘  is the quote attributed to Hippocrates, but the more accurate quote appears to be:
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” — Hippocrates, father of medicine, 431 B.C.

I’m not sure what he means about the medicine being our food but it does seem clear about food being medicine, and why not, we have to eat food anyway, so we may as well eat food that makes us healthy.  I am really excited to learn more about this, it feels like something important.

I also found some great quotes about using food as medicine, including some really old ones so obviously this has been known for a long time (d’oh, Hippocrates quote was 431 B.C.).  I’m still a little confused, it almost seems like we have gone backwards if wise people from centuries ago were saying to use our food as medicine and we don’t really do this.  The quotes I found and the movies like the one about the diabetics are teaching us what we knew so long ago. It doesn’t make sense.  Here are two examples:

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather, will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”

Thomas Edison – he invented the light bulb, so he was obviously very smart.

“He that takes medicine and neglects diet, wastes the time of his doctor.”

Ancient Chinese Proverb – Wow, an ancient proverb, this feels really important to me and may even be  something I could teach people one day.  Thanks for reading this, Gemma xo.

Note from David – Gemma’s message was written in 2012, and she’s right, it doesn’t make sense as a society to virtually ignore the role of food as a preventative ‘health treatment’, in favor of getting sick and then taking drugs which often have huge side-effects, even if they work.  Our bodies are actually intelligent beyond our comprehension so why not give them a clean, healthy balanced diet and let the body’s stunning brilliance do the work?  Gemma was also spot on with her quotes as  a movie was made in 2018 with the title ‘Let the Food be thy Medicine‘  and the movie actually starts with the quote she used from  Thomas Edison. I hope you enjoy the movie.

“The doctor of the future will no longer treat the human frame with drugs, but rather, will cure and prevent disease with nutrition.”
